Over the past couple of weeks I've noticed that the Swype keyboard on my Samsung Galaxy S3 has been opening slower and slower. Each time I attempt to write a text message or jot down some quick notes, I've found myself waiting far too long for the keyboard to pop up. Many people might not consider roughly 3 to 4 seconds to be long, but once you find yourself waiting 3 seconds every time you call the keyboard, you'll understand my frustration. Through much trial and error, I have found a fix. While it may not be permanent, it's working for now.
It seems that the keyboard attempts to load your entire personal dictionary each time the keyboard is called. But to be fair, I'm not entirely sure if that is what it is doing. I'm using the Swype keyboard on my phone and needless to say it automatically added far too many words to the dictionary over the course of my daily Android activities.
The fix is simple really, all I've done is cleared out the personal dictionary. The steps for this procedure are outlined below.
- From the Home screen, press your Menu button.
- Tap “Settings”
- Tap “Language and Input”
- Select the gear icon next to the right of “Swype”
- Tap “Preferences”
- Scroll down to “Reset Swype's Dictionary” and click “Yes”
Please note this was done on a Samsung Galaxy S3, Android 4.1.2. The above steps will delete all of your personal Swype dictionary, the words it has memorized by you typing them in. This information may not apply to all Android devices or all devices running Swype.
