The U.S. Navy is in preperations to unveil a futuristic new style of warfare, the use of lasers. Rigorous testing has been conducted using powerful laser cannons. Currently, the cannons have successfully shot down drone aircraft in testing areas. Compared to firing missles at a target, the high powered lasers could potentially save the military hundreds of thousands of dollars per shot. The first permanate installation is expected to be installed in October this year aboard the USS Ponce. However, the cannons aren't expected to be operational until 2014.
