Quake 3 Widescreen Fix
December 30, 2016

If you're like me, then you aren't quite ready to give up your classic PC games. Which is why I recently installed Quake 3 and Quake 3: Team Arena on a new Windows 10 laptop. However, I was disappointed to see large black bars on each side of the screen, and discover that the game wasn't filling the entire screen area. The available options in the game's system settings weren't much help either, but with a little digging, I finally found a solution that worked for me.

Note: The follow instructions detail what I did to resolve my issue, and are provided for entertainment purposes only. Exercise caution when editing game variables, and proceed at your own risk.

  1. Open up Quake III or Quake III: Team Arena

  2. Press the Tilde Key ~, to open the game console.

  3. Type the following commands, one at a time, into the console:

    • r_mode -1

    • r_customwidth 1920 (Change to your screen width)

    • r_customheight 1080 (Change to your screen height)

    • r_customaspect 1

    • vid_restart

The game should now be displayed correctly across your widescreen monitor, but results may vary.
